Ashwagandha, known in Polish as vitania sluggish, in Latin as Withania somnifera, is one of the most highly regarded herbs in Ayurveda, traditional Indian medicine. This plant has been used for thousands of years to support health and improve quality of life. Ashwagandha is known for its ability to reduce stress levels, helping the body cope with daily mental stress.
This adaptogenic plant helps regulate levels of cortisol, known as the stress hormone, which contributes to a better mood.
Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) can promote better quality sleep, which is crucial for overall body recovery and good health.
Regular consumption of ashwagandha may help improve cognitive function, such as memory and ability to concentrate. Thanks to its antioxidant properties, the plant can help protect cells from free radical damage. Ashwagandha is also used to support heart health. In addition, it can support the immune system, increasing the body's resistance to infection. Many studies indicate that it can also improve physical performance and muscle strength, which is beneficial for physically active people. This adaptogenic plant may also help improve mood.

Anti-stress effect
Modern life often brings with it high levels of stress, which can lead to a variety of negative mental states, including depression. In such situations, adaptogens - natural plant substances that increase the body's resistance to stress - can help. V. somnifera, also known as ashwagandha, is one popular adaptogen. A study by Khan and colleagues [22] showed that an aqueous extract of this plant administered to mice was able to negate the negative effects of stress. In addition, the glycovitanolides present in ashwaganda, which were administered to rats with pentetrazolium-induced anxiety, reduced the level of tribulin (a marker of clinical anxiety) in the animals' brains. These substances showed anti-anxiety effects comparable to those of antidepressants [23]. Another clinical study evaluated the safety and efficacy of vitania sluggard root extract in humans, where it was found that serum cortisol levels decreased without causing any adverse side effects.
Neuroprotective effects
W. somnifera leaf extract, which contains vitanon, provides protection against harmful scopolamine-induced changes in neuronal and glial cells. Scientific results confirm that the use of this extract reduces free radical production, limits DNA damage and reduces lead-induced toxicity in glial cells [24, 25]. In addition, the use of ashwagandha extract in mice prevents streptomycin-induced oxidative stress damage [26]. Ashwagandha may also hold promise for supporting the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases. Studies in animal models show that it can influence the reconstruction and regeneration of neurons and neural connections damaged by disease [27]. This contributes to patients' well-being, including by promoting improvements in psychomotor abilities.
Antidiabetic effect
Ashwagandha can be used as an adjunct in the prevention of diabetes. Studies in animal models have shown that extracts prepared from the roots and leaves of this plant are able to normalize urinary sugar levels, glucose-6-phosphatase activity, blood sugar levels and tissue glycogen content [21]. A stabilization of blood glucose levels was observed in diabetic patients who consumed ashwagandha root powder for 30 days. This effect was comparable to that obtained with glibenclamide (at a dose of 5 mg), with the leaf extract of this plant appearing to have a stronger effect than the root extract.
Action against male infertility
Ashwagandha root extracts can be used to improve sexual function, which is attributed to their effects on sperm production and on increasing libido levels [34]. Multiple studies confirm that the use of W. somnifera preparations for 90 days leads to improvements in semen parameters, such as an increase in sperm concentration, sperm motility and ejaculate volume in men suffering from oligospermia. In addition, an increase in testosterone and luteinizing hormone levels is also observed.
Anti-cancer effects
Vitamin A and vitanone, present in W. somnifera, may have significant contributions to anti-cancer therapies [5]. These substances, contained in the plant's leaf extract, promote the elimination of cancer cells through interactions with several signaling pathways, including the p53 protein, GM-CSF factor, death receptor, and the G2-M cell cycle checkpoint [15]. Apoptosis, a process of programmed cell death, is crucial in removing damaged or redundant cells. Vitamin A in ashwaganda stimulates apoptosis in melanoma cells through the induction of reactive oxygen species [16]. In addition, studies on human lymphoma cells (U937) have shown that vitamin A induces apoptosis by increasing ROS production, decreasing Bcl-2 protein levels, degrading poly ADP-ribose polymerase (PARP), increasing caspase-3 expression, and affecting the mitogen-activated kinase (MAPK) signaling cascade [17]. These actions contribute to promoting apoptosis of renal cancer cells during the process of radiation therapy.
Other health-promoting properties
Ashwagandha, also known as sluggish vitania, has health benefits such as regulating thyroid hormones (TSH, T3 and T4) and lowering blood cholesterol levels [35]. This plant is also helpful in muscle recovery after exercise [36], and has anti-anemic and anti-hypoxic effects [37]. Ashwagandha can also alleviate symptoms associated with menopause in women [38] and improve sleep quality [39]. Thanks to its anti-inflammatory properties, ashwagandha can protect the body from cartilage damage, which is particularly beneficial for people suffering from chronic arthritis [40]. Studies indicate that the use of extracts from this plant can relieve arthritis pain and provide an effective supplement or alternative to traditional treatments.
