Extensive research of a mycochemical nature has proven the presence in fruiting bodies of a number of compounds responsible for multidirectional medicinal effects. These include polysaccharides, protein-polysaccharide complexes, phenolic compounds, fatty acids, terpenes and others. The best-known compounds isolated from Trametes versicolor are PSK and PSP. PSK (Polysaccharide K - Krestin), used in Japan as an adjuvant in cancer therapy, is considered the first approved drug of fungal origin. And PSP (Polysaccharide Peptide) is used in China for its immunomodulatory properties. Extracts from the fruiting bodies, as well as individual isolated compounds, show biological activities of antioxidant, antibacterial, antiviral (including anti-HIV), antidiabetic, hepatoprotective or analgesic nature, among others.

Coriolus versicolor is one of the well-known traditional medicinal mushrooms used in China for more than 2,000 years. Polysaccharopeptide (PSP) has been identified as the main bioactive component that can be obtained from the mycelium (fruiting bodies) or fermentation wort of Coriolus versicolor. The polysaccharide content of PSP is ~60%, and the peptide content of PSP is ~10-30%. The main monosaccharides found in PSP include glucose, mannose and a small amount of galactose, xylose and fucose. β-Glucan is one of the identified components of PSP with an established immunomodulatory function. PSP has been approved by authorities and has been used clinically in Japan and China since the 1970s. PSP is helpful in improving the survival and quality of life of patients suffering from cancer, hepatopathy, hyperlipidemia, chronic bronchitis and other complex diseases
